2009 has been an exciting year at Alliance for Independence (AFI), culminating with our 55th anniversary celebration of providing services for adults with developmental disabilities. On September 15, a record number of people attended our annual “Community Recognition Dinner,” chaired by Florida State Representative Seth McKeel and his wife, Kim.
This past year saw many new and dynamic programs that were made possible by the generosity of Polk County-area residents and organizations. For example, with grants awarded by the Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland and the George W. Jenkins Fund within the Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland, AFI developed a unique “Retail Employment Program” which provides meaningful employment opportunities and vital income for more than 25 of our clients!
While we are proud of the strides AFI has made, there is still much more that needs to be done. Government cuts and anxiety over an uncertain future in the area of developmental disabilities have put clients and services at risk. Clients and their families have been forced to make difficult decisions based on available resources – including the family’s financial situation. In many instances, clients are faced with a choice between attending AFI or staying home unsupervised, unable to learn skills and work. At other times, limited financial resources may mean choosing between receiving health care and attending AFI and working. This is the environment in which we live. Now more than ever, AFI – and the clients we serve – need your help.
Through the generosity of people like you, AFI will continue to provide the high-quality services our clients have come to expect over the past 55 years – services that are necessary for these individuals to become respected and contributing members of our community. We hope you will consider becoming a member of AFI. If you are already a member – thank you and we hope you will consider renewing your membership. Of course, donations are always vital and appreciated!
On behalf of every client who will receive services as a result of your help, thank you for your generosity, your interest and most of all for your continued support.
Sincerely,
