The Special Olympics Program has on going events throughout the year. AFI assists in transportation to and from practice activities. Rich Wills, owner of FITniche, Inc. and a member of the AFI Board of Directors, is the Agency's volunteer coach. He provides his time and talents to training the AFI athletes for their Special Olympic events.
The Aktion Club is a service club for disabled adults sponsored by Kiwanis International. The North Lakeland Kiwanis Club is the sponsor for the AFI Aktion Club. Currently, the AFI Aktion Club has 58 members and in the 2 years since our charter we have participated in over 23 service projects.
The AFI Aktion club meets every third Wednesday of the month to discuss current/new service projects.
The Dream Team is a PR team comprised of individuals served by AFI that help with United Way tours and United Way presentations. The Dream Team meets every other Monday to discuss things such as professional attire and public speaking skills. There are 31 members on the Dream Team currently and new members will be chosen every January.
The Horticulture Program provides gardening experiences for clients who choose to participate. Instruction includes propagation, planting techniques and pruning. Individuals also increase manual dexterity and learn proper tool usage and outdoor safety.
The Sunshine Chorus has over 60 members that practice every Friday. An annual spring concert is held at the Lake Mirror Theater. Volunteer, Trudy West, and her assistant, Sandy Lewis, lead the chorus and ensure all arrangements are made concerning coordination of the event.
* Throughout the year there are cookouts, dances, and other special events for the individuals served by AFI.
